No one in Indonesia would have imagined that a few years ago, there was a player in Nijmegen named Calvin Verdonk — a footballer with Acehnese roots. Not only is his heritage special, but so are his skills. His performances have been remarkably consistent, both for his club and for Timnas Indonesia.

When he chose to represent Timnas Indonesia, he sacrificed more than a passport. With his outstanding form for one of France’s top clubs, LOSC Lille, it’s not impossible that he also sacrificed his chance to play for the Netherlands. Given his level today, had he not chosen Indonesia, a call-up to The Oranje could have been within reach.

But in the end, we all know what Calvin Verdonk decided. The people of this country will never forget the sight of him running until he could barely walk at Gelora Bung Karno, when Timnas defeated Saudi Arabia. And they will never forget who Calvin Verdonk is — a player who gave his all for Indonesia.
