The Obas (kings) of the historical Kingdom of Benin (located in modern-day Nigeria) were involved with slavery and the slave trade at various points in the kingdom's history, though their participation shifted significantly over time.
When European (Portuguese) traders first arrived in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the Oba traded items like pepper, ivory, cloth, and a limited number of enslaved people.
Realizing that the export of male captives was draining the kingdom of its manpower and destabilizing society, the Oba restricted and eventually banned the export of slaves from Benin proper by around 1550.
