This is a powerful speech, and it contains more truth than all the slop produced in academic "Ukrainian studies" over almost five years of war.

"Let us be honest: a great many people want to destroy Russia more than they want to save Ukraine. With growing zeal we read, several times a month, fervent articles in mainstream outlets announcing that Russia is about to collapse. We have been reading them for nearly a quarter of a century. The price of that slow-motion collapse is my nation, my country, my state, Ukraine."

Yet it is also true that the AfD are not friends of Ukrainians. Their programmatic demands include "re-migrating" Ukrainian men from Germany back to the war, and segregating Ukrainian children, together with the children of other migrants, from "bio-Germans" in schools. And they are not against the militarization of Europe, so long as it serves a "good purpose": fighting migrants.

It is also true that the deeper cause of such choices is that centrist liberals have turned into the most reactionary faction now, willing to justify anything, including genocides, only to cling to the remains of the rotten, decaying, West-centered international order a little longer.

It is also true that too many on the left are too weak, too fragmented, or too opportunistic, ignorant, and confused about Ukraine, not least thanks to the grifting "Ukrainian voices" Iuliia also talked about.

But not every alliance is justified, even in the name of national salvation.

Among AfD supporters and politicians there is no small number of people who genuinely believe their grandfathers did nothing so horrible when they exterminated or enslaved millions of people in Ukraine when they occupied our country in the 1940s. Or who think they didn't do enough.

This is not a party that is going to help Ukrainians "build factories there, restore infrastructure, create jobs, and fill the budget with taxes."

There should be another way.

One consequence of the AfD's victory is absolutely certain: the development of the political crisis in Germany, and in the EU more broadly, will accelerate. The only question is how much.

The crisis is also more likely to be resolved from the right than from the left. Although this very development may create the conditions for a very different European left to emerge, one once again able to be a force driving human history.
