As a former NFL Scout—

Ben Johnson is going to need to get rid of Caleb Williams to accomplish his goals. That’s not a hot take. That’s a fact. Williams had one of the lowest completion percentages in the NFL last season (58.1%) and the second slowest time to throw in the NFL (3.20 seconds Next Gen Stats). There’s no way to accomplish these goals with that kind of slow release and that level of inconsistency and inaccuracy. I’ve been saying it. Williams doesn’t fit Ben Johnson. Williams craves getting out of structure. Johnson loves structure. They are polar opposites philosophically. Johnson needs more than sporadic highlights. He needs emotional stability out of the position—not an emotional rollercoaster like Williams. He needs consistency. He needs a quarterback who can get the ball out of his hand and play on schedule. He needs a quarterback who can play within his structure of his offensive system. He doesn’t need a quarterback like Williams who does his own thing. Williams erratic footwork and broken internal clock do not sync well enough to the concept of timing routes. I have no doubt Johnson is capable of accomplishing these goals, but he’s not going to do it with Caleb Williams and his playground brand of football.
