The Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) launched the Hayabusa probe in 2010 and successfully collected samples from the asteroid Itokawa in 2010. This is the first time in human history that samples have been collected from an asteroid.
Since then, JAXA has launched the Hayabusa2 probe in 2014, which successfully collected samples from the asteroid Ryugu in 2020. The Ryugu sample is the first ever taken from a carbonaceous asteroid.
The two missions provided valuable data for the study of the origin and evolution of the solar system, and also provided important lessons for future space exploration.
