How do you tell people about your chronic illness?
I usually say something like “so for people w/o chronic pain, a good pain day is a 0 or a 1. For me with chronic illness, a good day on the pain scale is a 5 or a 6.”
I will never forget the time I tried to explain chronic illness to a friend by asking her "ok so where are you in pain right now?" Because she looked at me, so confused and said "what do you mean...nowhere" And it hit me that I'd forgotten you're not supposed to feel pain at all.
With chronic illness, you normalise so many things most people won't ever feel. You normalise high levels of pain, being exhausted, medical procedures and trauma, needing to rest after a shower. People see you surviving with an illness, but not all you had to normalise to do so.
@RevSarahLocke Baths, anti-inflammatory meds, and I have a collection of braces depending on what hurts the most. I also find something that sounds remotely appetizing (usually chips/candy/juice) to make sure I’m at least consuming something.
