Why do I feel so strongly about Hasan Piker’s rise in the Dem party? I started Moms Demand Action the day after the Sandy Hook School shooting in 2012. Simultaneous to the success of the org I started, I watched right wing extremism rise in opposition.

Alex Jones had been running InfoWars and broadcasting conspiracy theories for years. He had a substantial but relatively niche audience. But that changed after the mass shooting, which he used to promote the false claim that the massacre was a hoax or “false flag” operation.

Clips of Jones lying about Sandy Hook circulated widely, including among people who weren't regular InfoWars viewers. His confrontational style made him go viral. Then, InfoWars began selling supplements and other products alongside Jones's political/conspiracy programming. Free Speech Systems, the company behind InfoWars, generated more than $500 million in revenue from 2012–2022.

By 2016, Jones was one of the most recognizable figures in the broader American right-wing media ecosystem.

Extremists on the left are now following the same virulent, highly profitable model:

Normalize extreme rhetoric by repeating inflammatory claims.

Encourage an “us vs. them” worldview by leading audiences to believe “others” are fundamentally bad, dishonest, or threatening.

Turn outrage into engagement.

Foment anger and mistrust via provocative content.

Mobilize an audience against people they criticize, resulting in harassment and harm.

Spread questionable or misleading information at enormous scale.

I don’t believe we should silence, deplatform, or socially destroy demagogues on either side of the political spectrum. Conversations are not the same as campaigning. But if Democrats can condemn harassment, misinformation, and dehumanizing rhetoric from the right, they should call it out it when it comes from demagogues on their own side, too.

The difference between the left and the right (until now) has been our willingness to think independently and recognize right from wrong, rather than blindly defend our own side. If we embrace Piker, we risk sacrificing our common ground, our credibility, and ultimately the base of our own party.
