A volte la politica si riassume in un'immagine, in un abbraccio.

Il 28 febbraio 2025 il mondo guardava incredulo Volodymyr Zelensky umiliato e poi cacciato dalla Casa Bianca da Donald Trump e J.D. Vance.

Mentre quelle immagini facevano il giro del mondo, Keir Starmer era già al telefono con il presidente ucraino, invitandolo immediatamente a Downing Street.

Il giorno seguente, quell'abbraccio davanti al numero 10 diventava il simbolo di un altro Occidente.

Non fu soltanto un gesto di umanità. Fu un messaggio al mondo: se Washington prendeva le distanze da Kyiv, l'Europa non lo avrebbe fatto.

Da quell'abbraccio prese forma una nuova fase del sostegno europeo all'Ucraina, culminata nella Coalition of the Willing e in una leadership britannica che oggi, con l'uscita di scena di Starmer, lascia un vuoto difficile da colmare.

Nel mio ultimo articolo ricostruisco perché quell'immagine è diventata il simbolo della sua eredità politica.

This flying fox has struggled all night—sensitive wings torn to shreds, the roof of its mouth lacerated by trying to bite itself free.

Barbed wire is a major killer of wildlife in Australia:
More than 75 species have been recorded entangled, including numerous threatened species—thousands die every year.
One ecologist recorded >250 little red flying foxes entangled on one property in single week.

Only a tiny fraction can be treated. They die from heat, dehydration, blood loss and predation—raptors eat them alive on the fences.

These deaths are largely preventable. Making the top strand visible or replacing it with plain wire are easy ways to reduce the death toll.

Every one of these species plays an important ecological role—we need to wake up and realize that we need wildlife for our own survival.

This is MMA fighter Sean McInnes. When Anne Marie Boyle asked him to leave her alone, he punched her in the face so hard that he broke her cheekbone and her eye socket, knocked her unconscious, and left her with a life-altering brain injury.

He was given less than two years behind bars.
