BUILDING PHASES: UNDERSTANDING EVERY STAGE OF YOUR PROJECT

Every building you see standing strong today passed through different phases. No structure is built overnight. Understanding these phases helps you plan better, avoid mistakes, reduce waste, and complete your project with confidence.

Whether you’re building a simple bungalow or a duplex, these are the major phases your project will go through:

1. Planning and Design Phase
This is where everything begins. You consult your architect, engineer, builder, surveyor and other professionals.
Your drawings, budgets, soil investigation, approvals and overall project plan are prepared at this stage.
A good plan will save you from future mistakes.

2. Site Preparation Phase
After planning, the site has to be cleared.
Bushes, debris, trees, topsoil and any obstruction must be removed.
This prepares the land for setting out and foundation work.

3. Setting Out Phase
This is where the exact position of the building is measured on the ground.
Engineers and surveyors use instruments like dumpy level, total station, pegs and profiles to mark the layout accurately.

4. Foundation Phase

9. Plumbing and Electrical Phase

10. Plastering and Finishing Phase

11. Final Touches and Inspection Phase

How To Register A Trademark In Nigeria And Protect Your Brand Legally.

No Lawyer Required. Just These Steps.

Let me tell you something that will shock most Nigerian entrepreneurs.

Your CAC business name registration does NOT protect your brand. You need separate trademark registration.

What A Trademark Actually Protects

Once registered you receive exclusive rights to use your brand name, logo or slogan in Nigeria and the legal power to stop others from copying or imitating it. Registration is valid for seven years — renewable indefinitely.

Someone can register your business name as their trademark tomorrow — and legally demand you stop using it. Even if you have been trading under that name for years.

Here is how to stop that from happening.

Step 1 — Conduct A Trademark Search

Before filing you MUST search to ensure your trademark is not already registered or too similar to existing marks.

Go to the Nigerian Intellectual Property Office — NIPO portal at trademarks. fmiti. gov. ng and search your proposed name or logo.

Also search variations. If registering “QuickFood” — also search “Quick Food” and “Kwik Food.”

Cost — free.

Step 2 — Determine Your Trademark Class

Trademarks are registered by class based on the goods or services you offer. Nigeria uses the Nice Classification system with 45 classes. You can register in multiple classes but each class has separate fees.

Examples — Class 35 for business and marketing services. Class 41 for education and entertainment. Class 25 for clothing. Class 30 for food products.

Choose the class that matches exactly what your business does.

Step 3 — Prepare Your Application

Complete Form TM2 — the official trademark application form. Available at the NIPO office or downloadable online.

You will need your full name and address. A clear representation of your trademark — logo, name or slogan. The class or classes you are registering in. A list of goods or services covered.

Step 4 — Submit And Pay

Application fee — ₦10,000 per class plus ₦500 search fee.

Submit your completed Form TM2 with payment at the Trademarks Registry — Commercial Law Department — Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment — Abuja.

You can also submit through accredited NIPO agents across Lagos and other states if you cannot travel to Abuja.

Keep your payment receipt. That receipt is your proof of filing date — critical if a dispute arises later.

Step 5 — Examination And Publication

NIPO will examine your application to confirm it meets all requirements. If approved it will be published in the Nigerian Trademarks Journal for a two month opposition window — during which any third party can challenge your application.

If no opposition is filed — your trademark proceeds to registration.

Step 6 — Receive Your Certificate

Once approved NIPO issues your trademark certificate confirming your exclusive rights.

The entire process typically takes 12 to 18 months depending on NIPO processing time and whether any oppositions are filed.

Total Cost Without A Lawyer

Government filing fee — ₦10,000 per class plus ₦500 search fee.

For most small businesses registering in one class — under ₦15,000 total in government fees.

The One Warning You Must Take Seriously

My strong advice for men who are grinding and building: Stop pouring resources into women who only drain. Vet properly. Marry the builder, not the consumer. Goats 🐐, pigs 🐖, turkey 🦃 and other investments are more reliable than untested romance.

You will have a better ROI when you invest on goats 🐐 and pig 🐷 farm. Plan your future and start building today. Women come and go but the one that comes into your life and heavily contributes to your growth should never be allowed to go.
