$BTC is 17 sessions into a box it has not closed outside of once. Since Aug 22: zero daily closes below 76,248 and zero above 81,347. Spot 79,400 (-1.2% vs Sunday's close). Intraday it has probed 75,625 and 82,262, but on a closing basis the range is 77,083 to 81,272 and nothing has escaped it.
The 20d sits at 77,993. The 50d (69,701) and 200d (69,816) are roughly 12% below β that is the August melt-up off 62k, not a trend that needs defending yet.
What a retail chart does not show:
- Deribit's Sep 11 expiry has max pain at 78,000, against 1.02B of call OI and 806M of put OI. The 20d is 77,993. Those are seven dollars apart. Two unrelated mechanisms are pointing at the same number.
- That expiry prints the same morning as August CPI, 8:30 ET Friday. Dealer pin and macro shock land on one candle.
- Coinbase premium has been negative every hour of the last six, -0.012% to -0.025%. US spot is not the marginal bid here.
- 4h taker flow is 47.2% buy against 52.8% sell, while Fear and Greed reads 70 (Greed). Sentiment and actual takers disagree.
- Funding is not crowded: Binance +0.0029% and OKX +0.0015%, but Bybit -0.00085% and KuCoin -0.0009% per 8h. There is no leveraged long to flush.
- The genuine bid is the ETF: 1.91B of net inflow across the last 10 sessions, 730.8M on Sep 3 alone. That flow is holding the floor, not the perp book.
Overhead, 82,006 / 82,430 / 82,792 are the May 2026 pivot highs. The Sep 3 high stopped at 82,262 β inside that shelf, not through it.
Levels:
TRIGGER β daily close above 82,792, clearing the whole May shelf. Upside references 85,000 (no daily close above it since Jan 28) then 89,459.
REACTION ZONE β 77,300 to 78,010, the Sep 2 close up to the 20d and max-pain pair.
INVALIDATION β daily close below 76,248, the Sep 2 low. Under that, Deribit's Sep 25 max pain at 72,000, carrying 9.88B of call OI, becomes the magnet.
R:R, honestly: chasing from here to 82,792 against a close-under-76,248 stop is about 1.0:1. Waiting for the 78,000 retest makes that same target 2.4:1, and 85,000 becomes 4.0:1. The retest is the trade. The chase is not.
Calendar: August CPI Friday Sep 11, 8:30 ET. FOMC Sep 15-16 β and after the Sep 4 payrolls beat (162k against a 53k consensus, unemployment 4.1%, June and July revised up a combined 55k), CME FedWatch puts a 25bp HIKE from 3.50-3.75% at 58%. ATR14 is 2,304, 2.9% of price. A 6,014-wide box does not survive that calendar intact.

$BTC has coiled into its tightest 14-day range in a year: 62,488 to 65,402, a 4.53% band, 0th percentile of the last 252 sessions. 28 of the last 30 daily closes sit inside it. Last daily close 64,506.
The 20d (63,835) and 50d (63,752) have converged 0.13% apart, and price reclaimed both on Monday's 62,687 to 64,506 bar. The 200d at 69,040 is still overhead. This is a range resolution, not a trend trade.
What a retail chart does not show:
- CoinGlass 1-week liquidation max-pain: 81.7M of short liquidations sit at 64,719, only 0.9% overhead, against 84.0M of long liquidations at 62,177, a full 3.1% below. Near-symmetric size, wildly asymmetric distance. The nearer fuel is above.
- Coinbase premium is -0.106%. US spot is still a net seller into this bounce. That is a quality flag on it, not a confirmation.
- Perp funding is barely positive (Binance +0.0077% per 8h). There is no crowded long to flush.
- Aggregate open interest 48.5B, up 2.7% week over week. Positioning has built; direction has not resolved.
- Fear and Greed went 30 to 40 in a day.
Levels:
TRIGGER - daily close above 65,402 (the Aug 9 pivot). Upside references 65,658, then 66,910.
REACTION ZONE - 63,751 to 63,835, the converged 50d/20d.
INVALIDATION - daily close below 62,488, the coil floor. Under that, the 62,177 long pocket is the magnet.
R:R, honestly: chasing here up to 66,910 against a close-under-62,488 stop is about 1.4:1. Waiting for the 63,751-63,835 retest makes it about 2.4:1. The retest is the trade. The chase is not.
Calendar: FOMC minutes from the July 28-29 meeting land Wednesday Aug 19 at 2:00pm ET. Jackson Hole runs Aug 27-29, with Warsh's first keynote as Chair on the 28th. ATR14 is 977, or 1.5% of price. A coil this tight into that calendar resolves. It does not drift.

SCORECARD β this morning's $BTC call, 12 Aug.
Verdict: RESPECTED. Closed 63,412 β still inside the range, tagged the reaction zone.
We staked two numbers this morning, both on a daily close: 65,402 trigger, 62,227 invalidation. Neither went. Session low 63,236 pressed into the 63,185β63,352 reaction shelf and held it. Session high stopped at 64,416, still ~1,000 short of the trigger. That is 22 daily closes inside one range.
Why it resolved that way: the catalyst didn't surprise. July CPI printed 3.4% headline / 2.5% core β in line with consensus, and cooler than June's 3.5% / 2.6%. Price took the relief bid to 64,416 and gave back every point of it, closing a hair under the open and near the session low. A bid that can't hold on an in-line print is a range, not a breakout.
Derivatives agreed. Funding stayed positive but small (Binance +0.0066%, Bybit +0.0054% per 8h) β longs still paying, nobody flushed. Fear & Greed 26. No capitulation to squeeze, no leverage to unwind. Neither boundary had a reason to break.
Nothing about the structure changed, so the levels carry unchanged:
Trigger 65,402 β daily close above and the range breaks up.
Invalidation 62,227 β daily close below and this read was wrong. We'll say so.
Reaction shelf 63,185β63,352.
200d at 69,748 still overhead β no closes above it since June.
Next catalyst: PPI and jobless claims, 13 Aug.
A boring day is still a scored day. Every open call gets a verdict here, wins and losses alike.
