The 10 year anniversary of the $1.0+ trillion Belt and Road Initiative (#BRI) is being celebrated this week in Beijing.

I give China credit for the big risks it took on Africa to build & finance critically needed infrastructure when the West refused to do so.

There are visible examples across Africa of new roads, airports, railways, power plants, sea ports, health facilities, etc. And yet, there’s a lot of misplaced criticism by Western countries that China took advantage of Africa (i.e. overburdened Africa with debt, poor quality products, etc) despite the fact that virtually no major infrastructures were financed or built by the West in Africa the past 25 years.

Yes, some of the BRI transactions may be opaque and financially could have been structured better, but the fact is hundreds of millions of Africans today would still have been driving on dilapidated colonial-era roads, ride on broken railways and living in darkness without power had it not been for China’s investments and financing.
