My personal approach to effective altruism is meritmaxxing, and right now the ODF has a 2-for-1 special on dharma-per-dollar. If you're looking for good karma, it's an amazing deal
Yesterday I learned about the "photo-taking impairment effect" from @billardkarr, how taking a pic of an event or object reduces one's memory of it compared to simply observing it
Today I received this from my @WeCroakApp
"It is enough"
The ugly truth of community building is that its prized commodity is Cool People. You attract people by telling them Cool Person is coming to your thing, and don't you want a chance to gravitate in their orbit?
Which makes failure all too personal: you're just Not Cool Enough
In leaving small group conversations that you were actively part of, is it better to acknowledge that you're gonna wander off, or better to French exit?
this great @dreamyweather thread articulates the general, & inevitable, phenomenon of "ppl leaving the broad top-of-funnel space to go hang out in more intimate spaces"
the very first time i heard abt this was yrs ago when i started going to NYC rat meetups and asked @yashkaf (a very famously rationalist New Yorker) if i'd see him there; he said he hadn't gone in years. at the time i didn't understand..what do you mean you don't go to meetups *for the specific thing you like* anymore and just hang out with friends [who you met at the meetups]??
I like exercise names like “Romanian deadlift” or “Bulgarian split squat.” The addition of an Eastern European country adds a certain gravitas. I’m gonna invent something called the “Moldovan pushup”
still haunted by @exgenesis calling Hadestown "mid" and "for babies", after I shared it's my favorite musical which I've watched and cried three times to now
it's me, I'm a mid baby
