Don't always look for a niche with zero competition.

Zero competition can mean zero demand.

Instead, look for existing demand + clear gaps.

That's where interesting publishing opportunities often appear.

Another strategy that has really worked for me in this business is building a series.

When I find a profitable book title or a market that I see potential in, I don’t always stop at one book.

I try to think:

Book 1.
Book 2.
Book 3.
Book 4.

I look at the market and think about the different problems I can solve.

Sometimes it means creating different books for different audiences.

Sometimes it’s taking the same broad topic and approaching it from different angles.

Instead of publishing one book and moving on to another completely unrelated niche, I try to see if there is more I can build around a market that is already showing me demand.

If you find a market that’s working, don’t be too quick to leave it. See what else you can build around it.

Google Play Books deserves to be treated as a serious publishing marketplace, not simply another platform where you upload a book and wait for sales.

One of the biggest mistakes publishers make is assuming that what works on Amazon will automatically work the same way on Google Play Books. Different platforms have different audiences, search behaviour, pricing dynamics, and buying patterns. That means your approach has to go beyond simply uploading the same catalogue and hoping for the same results.

Research the marketplace. Study the categories. Look at the books already performing well, analyse their titles, genres, positioning, pricing, and series structure, and use those insights to make better publishing decisions.

The goal is not to publish more books blindly. The goal is to understand the market, identify demand, and build a catalogue around it.

Google Play Books is not an afterthought. Treat it like a real business channel, and learn how the marketplace works.

Rather Ask:

“Who is buying these books, what are they buying them for, and what could I offer them that is more specific?”

That's a much better way to research a KDP niche.

I’ve bought quite a few courses on Amazon KDP, and one thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of them don’t really explain the basics.

They go straight into research, keywords, niches, publishing and making money.

But what about the actual foundation?

How do you model a successful book?

How do you know what to model?

How do you actually write different types of books?

Because different niches require different approaches.

For example, self-help books have their own style.

You have to make the reader feel connected to you. The writing has to feel personal and useful.

That’s one reason I don’t advise using AI to generate an entire self-help book for you.

You can absolutely use AI to assist your writing, but the actual thoughts, experiences and voice should still come from you.

Even with cookbooks and children’s books, you have to understand what you’re creating.

A children’s book, for example, has to be written in a way a child can actually understand. You can’t just throw information together and expect it to work.

And this is something I noticed was missing from a lot of the courses and mentorships I came across.

Beginners are being taught what to do, but sometimes not why they’re doing it or how to actually do it properly.

And I think that can create problems.

Someone comes into KDP thinking they’re going to make a lot of money, starts publishing book after book, but doesn’t really understand the basics of the business.

That’s actually one of the reasons I started putting together my own beginner course.

I want to start from the foundation.

Understanding KDP.

Understanding what to model and how to model it.

Understanding how different types of books are written.

Understanding the basics before getting into all the advanced stuff.

Because before you start publishing more books, you should first understand what you’re publishing.
