I am sure you have seen the sensationalized news headlines regarding the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. Many of these articles are written to imply that the SBC doesn’t value women. That is simply not true.

There are many women leading in our convention and in our local churches. Women serve as professors, missionaries, administrators, committee chairs, deacons, ministry leaders, teachers, and so on. The issue is not women in ministry, we celebrate and value the ministry of women.

The point of discussion is whether the office of pastor/elder is reserved for men according to the New Testament. Again, the discussion is not on women leading and serving in the local church or in parachurch ministries, it's the office of pastor/elder.

The actions of the convention's messengers simply affirmed what the Southern Baptist Convention has historically held, namely, that the office of pastor/elder is reserved for men (1 Corinthians 14 and 1 Timothy 2) as articulated in the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.

“It’s [the local church] two scriptural offices are that of pastor/elder/overseer and deacon. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor/elder/overseer is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.”

Remember, autonomous local churches voluntarily choose to cooperate with the like-minded churches that make up the Southern Baptist Convention. As we witnessed this past week, the Southern Baptist Convention is complementarian, and that’s ok. There are lots of other denominations that are not in the same place.

All that to say, don't be misled by sensationalized news headlines or articles.

Gen Z is the least-religious-overly-entertained generation in U.S. history.

So, the primary role of Collegiate or Youth Leaders is not to be entertainers or event organizers. Their primary role is to be evangelists, missionaries, and disciple-makers.

That is the greater need.

How to reach Gen Z:

• Pray!

• Be real. Authenticity rules the day.

• Meet them where they are.

• Teach the Word in a way they can understand & apply it. The Bible is always relevant.

• Don’t dumb down the Gospel, disciple them up. Don’t lower the bar, raise the mission!

If a Youth or College Ministry is run like a “church within a church”… then when a student graduates, it feels like they’re having to join a different church that just meets at the same address. They don’t know anything about it, nor have a relationship with it.

So, they leave.
