i went and checked what it means to read below 6th grade level and this means that ~130 million people cannot work out the correct dose on a children's medicine label, can't read their own pay slip, can't follow the instructions on a consent form before surgery, can't locate basic information in a short newspaper article

the average 6th grader in 1850 was expected to have read the bible and understand shakespeare
