A quote from over 1900 years ago has never been more true.

The full quote from Juvenal’s Satire X (circa 100 AD) is a technical audit of a collapsed political class. He describes a people who once commanded "everything"—the law, the military, the executive power—but who eventually traded that sovereignty for a full stomach and a loud distraction:

"...Already long ago, from when we sold our votes to no one, the People have shed their anxieties; for those who once bestowed imperium, fasces, legions, everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses."

They didn't lose their power to a coup; they sold it for comfort.

In 100 AD, the "Bread" was the Annona (the grain dole). If the people were fed and entertained, they stopped auditing the Senate. They stopped caring about the cost of the "Legions." The result was a slow, multi-century drift from a Republic of participants to an Empire of subjects.

Nope. I don't think that at all. I think the vast majority of politicians on both sides of the aisle are crooks. I'm not in any way partisan. If you look at my profile, you will see I have wrote about all kinds of government scams and corporate welfare. But I will say, I'm not aware of any involving this much money, this fast. Maybe the Haliburton, KBR grift with GW and Cheney. But that took a little longer to get to half a trillion and the frontrunning of the markets wasn't as obvious. The crypto angle really accelerated this one. Everything the government does is a scam.
