Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of #India’s Uttar Pradesh state, has threatened to demolish the homes of those Muslims who put up “I Love Muhammad” posters or banners in front of their houses. The authorities have also banned #Muslims from carrying “#ILoveMuhammad” posters in religious processions.
Muslims in Uttar Pradesh have also been beaten up and arrested by the police for conducting processions with “I Love Muhammad” banners and posters. Social media has carried videos of the police slapping fines on Muslim boys for carrying “I Love Muhammad” stickers on their motorbikes.
In the following video, we can see some Muslims remove “I love Muhammad” stickers from in front of their homes after Adityanath threatened the “Bulldozer action” against them. In recent years, in many of India’s BJP-ruled states, Muslim-owned houses, shops and other structures have been demolished by the authorities in so-called punitive actions.
While minority Muslims in India are facing punishment for writing “I Love Mohammad”, in many Indian cities there are hundreds of thousands of Hindu houses with “#JaiShriRam”, “Jai Hanuman”, “Har Har Mahadev” or, “Hare Ram Hare Krishna” written in front of them, and the BJP governments have had no problems with them. Since Narendra Modi took to power in 2014, persecution of Muslims has been constantly on the rise.
Can one face legal action in the US or any European country for carrying a “I Love Jesus” sticker or poster? Certainly not. In fact, in a civilized country, for many, it is hard to believe that in India Muslims are being arrested and prosecuted for displaying “I love Muhammad” posters or stickers and that a government is threatening to bulldoze their homes for that “offence”.
In #Bangladesh, no government can ever oppress minority Hindus the way minority Muslims are persecuted in India. In India, followers of Hindu right-wing groups often violently torture Muslims, even sometimes lynching them. In Bangladesh, no Islamic group happens to carry out such atrocities against Hindus. Yet, leaders of Modi’s party and the pro-government “godi media” often make absurd accusations that Hindus in Bangladesh do not enjoy religious freedom and are victims of persecution. This is ridiculous.
