Narrative is a powerful thing.

People don't actually want that challenge on Salah to be a penalty. It quite evidently is a ridiculous assessment. They just want it as further grist to the mill of the idea that Lionel Messi is being unduly favoured by FIFA.

Those who do not fall into this particular camp, but still allege injustice, are mainly being emotional, having allowed themselves to become invested in an upset by an African side.

Egypt played this really well. Carried a threat with Hassan's pace and quick feet, allied to Salah's timing of release. Not for nothing did the former Liverpool man headline one of the finest counterattacking sides the sport has ever seen. They defended gallantly too, gumming up the middle and denying Messi space all match.

But then, the maestro shifted wide and found the space he had so lacked. And the Pharaohs were overwhelmed, wave after wave crashing, a plague of not flies or frogs, but of one flea, atomic.

The question that will haunt them forever: having had the game in the palm of their hand, how did they let Argentina go? How were they caught on the break in stoppage time, when they should have tried to quiet themselves and regrouped for extra time?
