For the millions of women already shaping Africa’s trade landscape through informal and grassroots networks, the question is not whether they are ready for AfCFTA. The real question is whether AfCFTA is ready to support them.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is seen as a game-changer for Africa's economies, potentially generating $450 billion in income and lifting 30 million people out of extreme poverty by 2035, according to the World Bank. However, these benefits are mostly aspirational for the millions of women, who represent about 70% of informal cross-border trade in West and Central Africa.
In this new article by CSEA researchers; Thelma Obiakor (Senior Research Fellow), Bisong Anthony Ekpang (Research Associate), Obiageli (Oby) Ekwunwa (Research Intern), examined the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on women traders in Africa, highlighting how women are essential to informal cross-border trade yet face significant barriers to participation in formal trade. They explored issues such as institutional neglect, lack of representation in trade governance, and the challenges women encounter, including harassment, limited access to finance, and inadequate support structures.

Congratulations to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on Gazetting Its AfCFTA Provisional Schedule of Tariff Concessions (PSTCs)!
What does it mean to gazette or domesticate a trade commitment? It is an official announcement that enhances transparency, ensuring that businesses, organisations, and citizens are informed of new regulations coming into force. This marks a key step towards the full implementation of the AfCFTA Agreement.
For traders, this provides clarity and certainty, confirming that Ethiopia will grant preferential tariff treatment to eligible goods upon importation, in line with its commitments under the AfCFTA Agreement.

We are set for the Validation of Ethiopia’s 🇪🇹 @AfCFTA Implementation Strategy!
The event kicks off shortly in Addis Ababa, bringing together key stakeholders to chart the path from strategy to implementation.
@MoTRI_Ethiopia@fdrepsi, @ECA_OFFICIAL@CanadaEthiopia 🇨🇦 @MelakuD
The conflict between Israel & Iran is escalating rapidly with a terrible toll, killing & injuring civilians, devastating homes & civilian infrastructure, attacking nuclear facilities.
The expansion of this conflict could ignite a fire that no one can control.
We must not let that happen.
2/2 🚨 @MelakuD further noted: “Strategies don’t implement themselves.”
The real work begins now—coordinated, whole-of-government action is key. The #AfCFTA National Implementation Committee will play a vital role.
@ECA_OFFICIAL stands ready to support.
@MoTRI_Ethiopia
1/2 In his opening, @eca_official’s @MelakuD applauded @MoTRI_Ethiopia 🇪🇹 for leading the validation of one of the most comprehensive #AfCFTA strategies—covering all 8 protocols incl. digital trade & women & youth.
A roadmap for inclusive, trade-led growth.
@fdrepsi@AfCFTA
🇪🇹 “This is not a ceremonial milestone. It is a call to action.” — H.E. Dr. Kassahun Gofe, Minister of Trade & Regional Integration @MoTRI_Ethiopia, at the validation of Ethiopia's @AfCFTA Strategy.
Ethiopia is moving from strategy to purposeful implementation!
@ECA_OFFICIAL
Finally, the Ethiopian Government, led by its Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, is holding a workshop to validate and launch its AfCFTA implementation strategy, which was developed with the support of @ECA_OFFICIAL @ATPC2 & the Policy Studies Institute.
