What is the difference between reformation and revival?

In the 1866 Sword and Trowel, C. H. Spurgeon defined revival: “The word revive . . . may be interpreted thus—to live again, to receive again a life which has almost expired; to rekindle into a flame the vital spark which was nearly extinguished.”

Notice the condition for revival. You can only revive something that was once healthy. While I agree that we need a new revival in our churches to sweep the land, I suggest something needs to come first.

Much decay has occurred as generations (and many church leaders) have been abandoning the authority of God’s Word beginning in Genesis. I suggest the church body has a cancer that is attacking its life, and this needs to be dealt with, so the body can be revived.

In this era, compromise on the historical truths of Genesis, which leads to further compromise throughout Scripture, is a cancer. Much decay has occurred as generations (and many church leaders) have been abandoning the authority of God’s Word. This has opened the door for secular thinking to permeate the church, including antibiblical views of marriage, gender, and other areas.

It is my contention that for God to bring a revival to the church, there needs to be a new reformation. Reformation is a call of the church back to honoring the absolute authority of the Word of God, from the very first verse in Genesis.

We need a new reformation today—a reformation where God’s people, particularly Christian leaders, repent of compromising God’s Word and stand boldly on God’s infallible Word.

Too many Reformed preachers want to be ivory-tower intellectual guys or cultural pundits who exegete Fox News and the latest social-media hot take. True and lasting pulpit power is plentiful effusions of the Holy Spirit + ordinary, timeless gospel proclamation that equips Christians for their callings & prepares them for eternity. The pulpit isn't the place for you to arrogate your theological pet doctrine, nor your current pet peeve and hangup.

Most Reformed folks are reluctant to talk about the Holy Spirit, walking in the Spirit, prayer, fasting, demons, angels, impressions...They think they'll be accused of being a charismatic. So what! Just point them to the Puritans, Covenanters, Spurgeon, Reformers, etc.

And If I preach , atleast for now ,I write or type the whole transcript. But good to see someone like you can preach with that notes outline like other gifted teachers/ Preachers.
Using notes isn’t a weakness , it is faithfulness to our limitations, which is itself a form of humility before God I believe.

The only sermon in history that needed no notes, no second draft, and no apology at the end ,was preached on a hillside by someone who is the LOGOS …The Word became flesh and that Sermon was not prepared. It was revealed.

I agree. 💯 ! Dumping a lot of PhD knowledge and Greek/Hebrew all over the place won’t make for a true and genuine preaching. (Personally I’m not against any of this.) But one shouldn’t deceive oneself by just claiming to be Reformed without knowing why Reformed ? Reformed toward what ? and what Reformed actually means? ​​​​​​​​ eggheads will only create more eggheads ..
