@nazzobetweeting Overlooking the lack of immigration, that line still doesn’t scan right. You’d expect it to either refer to the London- New York flight or name the specific airport (Heathrow, Gatwick, etc)

A London, Ontario flight to LaGuardia is theoretically possible in the future….

@saprior Overly simplistic but… nothing in NCAA is linked to academic ventures and NCAA is still projecting an image of being “amateur” despite recent changes that mean NCAA athletes can make millions. Hinchcliffe is symbolic of that tension between student sport and big business

In N America features such as salary caps guarantee profitability, no relegation provides long term certainty and large local monopolies provide scale (7 London EPL teams vs no more than 2 NYC teams)

@iownabook @OlympicStatman Today certain 🇮🇲 sports (eg football) have pragmatically chosen status quo and some 🌍 governing bodies restrict new members that prevents🇮🇲 (eg athletics.

Then there are the sports where athletes compete under the Manx flag - think taekwondo is the most recent membership

@iownabook @OlympicStatman Practically, the position varies between sports. The 1960s and 70s were challenging economically for the Island so in several sports there wasn’t the finances or infrastructure to create a separate federation and 🇮🇲 athletes have to compete under a different flag

1. $100M+ of committed financial backing with a large risk tolerance (or benevolent financing); or

2. Incompetence to the point that it makes you wonder about the motives of whoever approved some of these sums

@LissOnTrack There’s no absolute need for a non British pundit - but there is a benefit in having diverse punditry which includes being outside the “standard” British system. It also comes back to is the BBC providing sports coverage or a magazine program with a bit of sport happening
