Author most recently of Land Between the Rivers: A 5,000 Year History of Iraq. Former editor, Middle East Monitor and foreign editor, Prospect Magazine.
A very nice review of my new book LAND BETWEEN THE RIVERS in the New York Times.
"Conceptual originality and laudable ambition... inspired by firsthand experience of the region. A sweeping history."

Back in 1992, being taught by the world's leading philosophy professor in a Harvard lecture hall, I never dreamed I would be appearing next to him in the world's best magazine. What an honor.

“But as Muhammad’s system allowed no difference between religion and politics, and as Mamoun was the ruler of the faith-empire, it was a worldly struggle too.”

@RoyKAltman The four standards in the Montevideo Convention of 1933 are a formalization, in 20th century treaty language, of the key Westphalian criteria from 1648, which ended the 30 Years War that killed ~5m Europeans.
Westphalia also included external independence and mutual recognition.
Today, we remember a legend.
On this day in history, Harambe would have celebrated another birthday. An icon that became part of internet history, American culture, and an entire generation’s timeline.
Tomorrow marks 10 years since we lost him. Ten years since the moment the world stopped scrolling and collectively mourned something bigger than a meme.
He became a symbol of loyalty, strength, chaos, unity, and the strange beauty of the internet bringing millions of people together for one cause: never forgetting Harambe.
Everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news. And somehow, a decade later, his legacy still lives on.
Gone, but never forgotten.
Rest easy to a true patriot. 🕊️🇺🇸

@RupertLowe10@DPJHodges Whichever side you're on it should be clear that informed "Reform" voters will prefer Restore.
1) It is not possible to like, or trust, Farage. Everyone knows this, it's just a fact of life.
2) Most of the cabinet that oversaw the Boris Wave is now in Reform.
“Despite rapid Westernization, Russia before the 1860s more closely resembled a premodern Eastern steppe empire than a European state.”

And let us not forget this part:
At China's current fertility rate of TFR=0.93, the population halves every 25 years.
(Net migration is of course dramatically negative.)
China lost 1.4m people in 2024 and 3.4m in 2025 as the negative curve steepens...
@realMaalouf People can make of this pattern what they will, but this is indeed the timeline.
(Perhaps two tiny quibbles on dates, eg. Battle of Tours 732)
