Over $3B of Nutella is sold a year and it is the crown jewel for the Ferrero Group, Italy’s richest family (~$40B).

The recipe itself goes back centuries.

A wild detail: Napoleon is responsible for its invention.

In 1806, the French General turned Emperor started a continental blockade against his seafaring foes in the UK.

The move led to a huge cocoa shortages across Europe.

Ever resourceful, Italian chefs started using ground hazelnut — which was abundant in northwestern Italy — to stretch their dwindling chocolate supplies.

They combined cocoa, hazelnut and sugar into a paste called gianduia (named after a carnival character popular in the Piedmont region of Italy).

Fast forward to 1946. Europe was dealing with yet another continent-wide shortage of cocoa (and food stuffs in general) following the end of World War II.

An Italian pastry chef by the name of Pietro Ferrero — a native of Alba, Italy — whipped out the recipe for gianduja and created a snack aimed at regular folk working on tight purse strings.

The snack was sold as small bars and was a huge hit. Fererro turned that bar into a spread called Supercrema.

In 1964, the Italian government started to crack down on superlatives in ads. Apparently, “super” was too hype of a word to have in a creamy-chocolatey product.

In response, Pietro's son — Michele (who now ran the family business — chose a new name that evoked the flavor of nuts. It literally could not be more literal: Nutella (which you're probably eating with a spoon out of the jar right now).
