@GraceRandolph I hope so. But they've been doing these "limited time" mall experiences for Toys R Us for several years now, and it has been pretty sad and disappointing. I'm not sure this will be much more exciting than the Disney-branded section at a Target store.
@Lons Many people who complain about theater prices are already overpaying in like 27 other areas (Apple instead of Android/PC, more expensive car, vacations, brand name whatever instead of generic, DoorDashing instead of cooking, and on and on and on...)
@Lons If movies were 8 hours long, an affordable meal purchased at the theater would be an issue. I bow to nobody in my love of pizza and nachos. But at the movies? The most I spring for is soda and popcorn. Get the pizza and nachos before or after, people. It's not complicated.
@Lons I call this the Grace Randolph effect. Can't talk for more than 10 seconds about a movie without talking about box office/money and whether it can spawn a sequel/cinematic universe. Star Wars nerds in line in 1980 weren't talking about box office.
@Lons@muhammadbutt A few years ago when that Kevin Smith He-Man cartoon came out, a bunch of "fans" came out of the woodwork to freak out about it, and I'm pretty sure they hadn't spent one moment thinking about He-Man since their parents disappointed them in 1983 on Christmas morning.
@Lons First plank of anybody running in the next election should be to immediately turn this ballroom into a playground for underprivileged kids, or a Pokemon museum, anything more useful.
@Lons The actual films/stories told in the Avatar films don't seem to resonate or stick with some people who watch the films in good faith. The Avatar films move me *zero*. I watch the movies like that video of Rich Evans from Red Letter Media watching the "Robocop" remake trailer.
@Lons Setting aside the trolls, etc., I do see where some of the disconnect happens when discussing JC. He *is* a genius, and the Avatar films are a huge tech achievement, and to not give him props for his singular prescience about the tech would be a dick move. But.....
@BrianBrown444 SDCC features tons of reveals from toy companies, publishers, and film and TV that don't require Hall H panels, etc. The entire convention floor has zero to do with whether Marvel or DC is doing a panel.
@BrianBrown444 SDCC makes money by selling tickets and selling vendor space. Cutting the number of days in half, moving to weekday-only, and moving to another city, will result in a huge drop in revenue. SDCC is packed like sardines even when no studios show up; they *don't* need studios.
@BrianBrown444 That sounds sufficiently adamant yet unaware. It isn't a trade show; thinking the thing is dying because the big studios don't do panels is nuts. I don't understand why people think ComicCon is entirely a few movie studio panels. There are toy companies, publishers, vendors, etc.
@GraceRandolph It's fine to say "SDCC maybe won't matter in the future to entertainment reporters", but tons of other stuff happens at SDCC. It might just cease being a movie industry trade show and go back to being an actual convention. E3 isn't a good comparison; it was always a trade show.
