Any music scholar folks have an electronic copy of David Lidov’s “Structure and Function in Repetition” or the book it came from, “Is Language a Music?”
@RobertTalbert A simpler explanation is that remote learning in a dorm room is more appealing than remote learning in your parent’s house. I think it has less (though probably something) to do with quality of instruction, and more to do with the flexibility remote enables.
I just need to quickly write down a bit of music, but getting this thing I paid A LOT OF MONEY FOR to even open is taking an hour. @SteinbergMedia, you really need to make this better. (3/3)
I have never been so irritated with a piece of software than I am with Dorico by @SteinbergMedia. And not because it’s a bad product to use! To simply to open it, I have to run a Download Assistant, eLicenser, Activation Manager. (1/2)
@juliannegrasso @dellantonio@EJLada@FergusonGuitar @AMS_musicology @SMT_musictheory@SEM_Office I think it’s entirely related to how low our registration cost is. I’d support it being higher to accommodate these kinds of things, but I might be a minority in that opinion. We should ask the opinions of those running for the SMT board!
@juliannegrasso @dellantonio@EJLada@FergusonGuitar @AMS_musicology @SMT_musictheory@SEM_Office I was involved with discussion about these sorts of things for a few years with SMT, and I can confidently say that you’d be blown away with the cost of AV at conference hotels.
I always feel uncomfortable voting for SMT officers and board members. It’s always the case that super qualified people get nominated, so I struggle to find a way to distinguish between candidates.
If this is the route that the SMT wants to go, I’d argue that they should expand the nominating slate. If I hadn’t been in the field a long time, I might not know anyone!
@lefternco Seriously. I mean, I guess I’ll take it but it seems like the least of the street’s problems. Wonder if they’re going to fix the Norwood Ave sinkhole up by Bryant.
It’s hard to convince my wife that we should spend the money to install something kind of ugly in our house that doesn’t always work well in cold climates. On the other hand, it will help save the planet from catastrophic climate change.

But reviews of these systems aren’t universally great, particularly in colder climates. In addition, they’re kind of ugly and there seems to be a good bit of price gouging from installers.

@siracusa So it sounds like you don’t think you’ll retrofit your current home. Any thoughts about the current state of the technology and whether now is a good time to make a switch?
Since I know he has an old house with radiators and he’s also passionate about technology and climate, I wonder what @siracusa thinks about heat pumps.
