@David_Hambling@Christophe_Tymo Indeed, but new radars are less vulnerable to electronic surveillance & attack than commonly assumed. Because of physics/microelectronics, electronic protection has been outpacing ES and EA for some time now. Regardless, you're right, the offense-defense spiral will continue.
@David_Hambling@Christophe_Tymo And I need to point out that bullfrog and systems like it won't be effective without airbursts; PABMs make an enormous difference. Too bad DTIC is down, there are papers on there that are very relevant.
@David_Hambling@Christophe_Tymo The individual components of an airburst-based radar-directed system are tested, and some are combat-proven. It's about putting everything together, fleshing out CONOPS, producing enough, building up full formations, and figuring out TTPs.
@David_Hambling@Christophe_Tymo In principle, a modern son-of-Jav should be much cheaper. In practice, the institutions Congress has implemented will screw it up. "Drones" will end up expensive too. IMO, the debate should be about systems & industrial policy, rather than missiles, tanks, and drones.
@missrobinson They can't even explain how an AGI won't paperclip humanity. The models are not aligned and there is no realistic plan for alignment. The so called tech bros die with the rest of us.
Don't build general intelligence, focused on *narrow* superintelligence instead.
@CaveatLector@Morgridthenecro@AlexCaswen@GeorgeRoush Reducing the combat effectiveness of a very expensive system to save 2000 $ per very expensive system is fucking stupid. Penny wise and a pound hella dumb.
@David_Hambling@Christophe_Tymo Future rotor attack drones will more optimal for closed terrain where turning radius matters (buildings, dense veg). In open terrain, the lowend munitions will look more switchblade-like pushers. Anyhow, the dense terrain problem is interesting, but this post is already too long
@David_Hambling@Christophe_Tymo Radar is exceptionally good at searching & tracking large numbers of targets, over a large volume, in all weather. RWS are capable of rapid and accurate pointing. PABMs are cheaper than copter drones. This doesn't bode well for cheap slow drones.
@CaveatLector@Morgridthenecro@AlexCaswen@GeorgeRoush Okay, 2000 is a bit pricey, fair enough.
Youโre still reducing the combat effectiveness of a multimillion or multibillion dollar platform to save 2000 bucks. Penny wise and a pound foolish.
@David_Hambling@Christophe_Tymo Just the opposite. This is not even remotely close to the best technology, yet DIY FPVs are already showing how suboptimal they are compared to real PGMs and missiles.
@JamesRaxz@mickeyhynes I think the xm30 is useful everywhere. It's not just an IFV but can also act as a SHORAD if it's medium caliber gun has the right ammo.
@Lunakerrigan@JamesRaxz Nope. The budget documents tell a different story. They redirected the money from procurement to O&S. Congress spent the money on an excessive number of extremely expensive infantry formations and GWOT.
@justincbzz Poland has them but doesnโt need them. At this point, anyone who thinks Poland wouldnโt absolutely kick Russias teeth in is totally clueless.
