Wamego, I owe you an apology. I wasn’t familiar with your game.

For 24 years as a Manhattan native, I thought I had the Fourth of July experience figured out. I knew the routines, the rhythms, the familiar glow of fireworks against the same sky I’ve watched my whole life. I didn’t realize I was missing something just a few miles down the road.

Then you showed out.

Somehow, you turned a fireworks show into something more. Something that actually feels like the event of the year. Something so hazy toward the end, yet so incredibly patriotic.

It wasn’t just the fireworks. It was the atmosphere, the energy, the way the whole town leaned into everything: the parade, the car show, the food, all of it. It felt like 200,000 people packed in, yet somehow it still carried that small-town charm. That balance isn’t easy to pull off.

So yeah, consider me converted. A Manhattan lifer who made the short trip and realized he’d been sleeping on something special.

Boom Town, you’ve got my attention now, and honestly, you’ve got a big piece of my Fourth of July from here on out. 🇺🇸🎆

Junior Kylie Pfizenmaier of Clay Center (4A) dominantly won the 3200m NCKL Championship by over 18 seconds with her time of 11:41.50. Pfizenmaier’s PR of 11:27.16 puts her in the top 4 in 4A currently. She was also on the 4x800 team that was NCKL Champions earlier in the day.
