Richard Garriott, creator of the classic Ultima games and known as “Lord British,” is reportedly close to regaining the rights to the series from Electronic Arts. This could happen as early as next year.

He created Ultima in 1981, and the series became one of the most important RPG franchises in gaming history. EA bought Origin Systems and the rights in the early 1990s, after which the franchise has been mostly inactive.

Garriott stated that he has repeatedly attempted to revive Ultima

"Every decade or so, I tried to work with EA on a revival of Ultima. They always seemed interested enough to start talking, then abandoned talks just as quickly."
