To be honest, I don’t want to write this. Over the past couple of years, social media has felt more and more irrelevant to me, as so many chase an image they want others to believe about them. But I couldn’t think of a better way to honor the life of someone who stood relentlessly for truth and free speech like Charlie Kirk than by using words to share what I’m feeling.

My heart sank at the news of his passing yesterday, and it sank further as my little daughter climbed onto me, begging for her daddy’s attention, completely unaware of any stress and weight on my shoulders. She just wanted her daddy. My grief grew as I thought of Charlie’s daughter, who will never again get to climb into her daddy’s arms.

So I want to make two statements.

First, to those blinded by anger and hatred. Those who believe violence can ever be justified because they lack the strength to win arguments with reason; you are wrong. You fail to see that the very reason our forefathers gave their lives was so that we could have a voice, a vote, a future without the shedding of blood. Leaders in every capacity must stand boldly against any ideology that attempts to excuse violence in the name of political or religious disagreement.

Second, to those of us who follow Jesus Christ. As my heart hurts today, I am reminded to pray. Maybe, somehow, this horrific act and the haunting images that follow it will spark a revival in our nation. Maybe God will use them to shake hearts and call our country back to Him. So we pray.

Anne Graham Lotz once said that revival begins when you draw a circle around yourself and make sure everything inside that circle is right with God. Today I’m praying for that revival. And I commit, in the future, to honor those like Charlie Kirk who gave their lives and shed their blood so that we could have a voice, a vote. I commit to vote, to speak, and to keep electing leaders who uphold the values that made this the greatest nation to ever exist.

Man, we quickly take things for granted. I am 34,000 feet high above the clouds on a man-made, man-engineered bird. Yet, nothing in me feels like this is abnormal. Maybe a generation in the future will feel this way about space travel?

Sunday School taught me a lot about leadership, but one lesson always sticks with me: everybody is somebody, created in the image of God.

Business reminds me of this all the time. You don’t have to be the smartest, the most talented, or the most connected. You just have to be the one who shows up, does the work, and takes the next step.
