Enslaved and free Black women in the Caribbean and the Americas were often forced by law or social pressure to cover their hair with headscarves (tignons).
Initially it was to signify inferiority and hide their beauty ( to prevent competition with white women), but they defiantly transformed these coverings into elaborate symbols of cultural pride and resistance using rich fabrics like madras and linen and decorating with jewels and lace.
Today, they're enduring symbols of resilience, beauty, and cultural heritage.
