The United States has had an extensive military presence in Greenland — and chose to dismantle it.

During and after World War II, the United States established a broad network of military bases and installations across Greenland. These included Narsarsuaq (Bluie West One), Ikateq (Bluie East Two), Bluie East One, Camp Century, and Kangerlussuaq (Søndre Strømfjord Air Base).

In total, the United States operated approx 15–17 bases and major installations in Greenland. Most were closed shortly after the war. Camp Century was abandoned in the 1960s, and Kangerlussuaq — the last major U.S. air base — ceased to function as an American military base in 1992. Only today Pituffik Space Base remains, with 150 American soldiers.

This large-scale drawdown was not the result of Danish inaction, but of American strategic choices made during a period when the Arctic was assessed as a lower security priority.

Since the 1951 Defense Agreement between the United States and Denmark, the United States has had the legal right to establish, maintain, and expand its military presence in Greenland. That option already exists.

If the United States now considers Arctic strategically critical, this does not require new narratives or the reassignment of blame. It requires American decisions and American investment — within the framework of an agreement that has been in place since 1951.

“🇬🇱 Let me state this calmly and clearly from the outset: there is neither reason for panic nor for concern.

The image shared by Katie Miller, depicting Greenland wrapped in an American flag, changes nothing whatsoever. Our country is not for sale, and our future is not decided by social media posts.

That said, the image is disrespectful.
Relations between nations and peoples are built on mutual respect and international law — not on symbolic gestures that disregard our status and our rights.

We are a democratic society with self-government, free elections, and strong institutions. Our position is firmly grounded in international law and in internationally recognized agreements. This is not in question.

Naalakkersuisut (Government of Greenland) continues its work calmly and responsibly. We engage in dialogue, safeguard our interests, and uphold the international rules that also bind our partners.

There is no reason for panic.
But there is every reason to speak out against a lack of respect. 🇬🇱”

It is very hard to deal with this. Here is a USA senator saying that the people of Greenland are "all in on it".

The leader of Greenland viciously says no. Every single member of the Greenlandic parliament says no. They just had an election two weeks ago. No one who wants to be American was elected. Not a single one.

A recent very large poll showed that 85% are against leaving Denmark to become part of the USA. Only 6% supported it.

It is almost unanimous. Never has a NO been clearer.

Yet these f..... people just continue to lie and tell the American public that people in Greenland want to be part of the USA. And the American "journalists" let them get away with it.

På egen krop har jeg oplevet det smukke og selvstændige Grønland igennem 18 måneder. Og ja, Grønland har udfordringer som kan hjælpes (og læses) i regi af Rigsfællesskabet og IKKE ved en såkaldt “fri” association aftale med USA!
