A 17th-century lock that kept receipts.
This is a detector lock made by Birmingham locksmith John Wilkes around 1680.
Its keyhole was hidden behind the figure’s leg, which could swing aside to reveal it. The hat and knob were part of the opening mechanism, while the small numbered dial recorded how many times the lock had been opened.
Long before digital access logs, this lock could tell an owner if a room had been entered while they were away.
Security, but make it art.
