Not sure it’s entirely accurate to say British liberalism was stomped to the ground.
More the case that it voluntarily just laid down in the mud and allowed itself to be crushed, lest it should become any kind of bulwark against the bulldozing of the left.
It’s very bad that British liberalism has been stomped into the ground almost as thoroughly as the left have, and all of it just to prop up a tiny gaggle of horrible politicians that almost nobody in Britain particularly likes or ever wanted. But there it is: you were warned.
There are still libs at the Guardian. They’re having a hard time convincing management - who hate and fear them - that the government just declaring protestors terrorism supporters to be arrested is very bad and authoritarian. Because management are the same people as government.
I don’t think the people who gave us mass arrests of little old ladies, Tommy fucking Robinson at the Oxford Union debate and state participation in the IDF’s destruction of the Gaza Strip are now going to admit their crimes, apologise to us all, work to atone and then retire.
@joncstone@ChinaNotes@rorysutherland Not true, I'm afraid (that is, the 'not fussed' bit, not the niche-ness).
I've used a PC when travelling & working for years, and relied on train wifi (Southern is pretty good).
I don't have a phone. (Relatedly it's amazing how many say they wish they didn't too, in response...)
@MikeTappTweets@owenjonesjourno Honestly, the quality of many of our MPs is so, so dismal.
And yet, they have such self-regard - even whilst displaying a mixture of ignorance, arrogance & downright stupidity.
Sadly tho, their brief time in the spotlight further degrades our polity, & we all end up worse off.
NEW: There is “unbelievable” waste and inefficiency at the MoD, former armed forces minister Al Carns has said, adding that every time he would “turn a stone over” he would get another shock.
He tells @jessicaelgot that he was angered by unwillingness to confront sunk costs of legacy programmes – and that mismanaged projects should be scrapped in favour of new technology.

The old rules-based order is never coming back. You can’t have rules everyone must obey requiring e.g. “All of these important countries need to send several leading politicians to prison, and many more need to be hounded into retirement in disgrace”. It’s not going to happen.
You’re going to see an incredible amount of fake outrage about facial scans by people who merrily have their faces scanned 20 times a day to use Apple Pay.
That said, @MikeTappTweets is trying to coax @ZackPolanski into saying he supports Palestine Action.
That's so he can get a political opponent arrested for their opinions.
That tells you all you need to know about this government and their hideously sinister law.
The fact that your government has made it illegal for me to answer yes is a damning testament to your flagrant disregard for civil liberties.
This may be targeted at those taking action against the genocide, but it sets a very dangerous precedent that puts everyone at risk.
This Governments branding of protest as 'terrorism' has seen grandparents arrested and dragged through the courts simply for holding up signs.
It's deeply authoritarian when people are speaking out against a genocide and for a free Palestine.
