Category 5 Hurricane Melissa has officially made landfall on Jamaica as the strongest landfalling hurricane in Atlantic history, with sustained winds of 185 mph and gusts up to 225 mph.
A tragic moment for Jamaica.
Obvious wavenumber-5 mesovortex pattern within Hurricane Melissaโs eyewall earlier today โ when the simulation matches reality.
Just two decades ago, the very existence of mesovortices was still a matter of debate.
892 mb at sea level is absurd. You would need to climb to 1.1 km (3600 ft) above sea level to experience the same pressure on a normal day. A slab of air 1.1 km thick was essentially removed from the column above the Melissaโs center.
To give you a sense of how incredibly rare and unique Hurricane #MELISSA is, here are the most-intense landfalling Atlantic hurricanes that we have on record.
MELISSA is now tied with LABOR DAY 1935 at the top โ something I'd never imagine to see in my lifetime.
The Sentinel-2 satellite captured this image of Melissa's eye at peak intensity. 10m pixel resolution - one of the best satellite images ever captured of a hurricane of this intensity.

Prayers up for Jamaica ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐
Hurricane Melissa has unleashed winds over 180 mph, with gusts reaching 225 mph โ one of the strongest storms in world history. ๐
Stay safe, Jamaica. The world is with you. ๐๐๐๐ค
