The Musée d’Orsay wasn’t always a museum. It started life as a railway station built for the 1900 World’s Fair, when Paris was obsessed with speed, light, and progress. By the 1970s it had fallen silent, too short for modern trains but too striking to destroy. The French turned it into something new, a place to celebrate the art of the very era when it was built.
Today, it holds the world’s largest collection of Impressionist paintings, and there’s something fitting about that. Artists like Monet and Renoir once painted the changing Paris that surrounded this station. Their work now fills its old waiting rooms.
If you visit, start upstairs where the light hits the gallery perfectly. Stand by the huge clock window and look toward Montmartre. It’s one of those quiet Paris moments that reminds you the city never really stands still.
