My tears were flowing as we watched our imperfect characters make life-altering choices and finally stand up for what they want. It's not easy, especially when, as Xiao Wei said, you've been bound for so long - to discouraging words, to old habits, and to the perception that there was no other choice. For me, this was the scene where Xiao Wei truly grew up.

I had a good laugh when everyone, Xiao Fang and his mum included, tricked his father into drinking a face-numbing tea, tied him up, and gave him a taste of his own medicine. With people like his father, you really do need to be cruel to be kind. But what truly got to me was when Xiao Wei finally told his father how he felt, the suffocation and constant belittling his father had put his two sons through. And then him saying he wants to be a father who is different from him. I think his old man finally got the message, and Xiao Wei has truly stepped into fatherhood and will begin to chart his own path.

Then there are the two aunts. Xiao Fang's aunts are often well-meaning, but they have a tendency to overstep while struggling to manage their own lives. The children are so much more perceptive than the adults. The younger aunt's temper needs reigning in, but her little boy is right. She won't want to divorce her husband. The man truly loves his family and is doing what he believes is best to protect them. As for the older aunt, her daughter is spot on. The man who is supposedly her fiancé has very little regard for her heart. Aunt knows it but doesn't want to face it. I'm glad she'll leave him. Sisters, if a man prioritises his ex over your feelings, please just dump him.

There was a moment toward the end when the entire community came together to help Xiao Fang, and her uncle told both Xiao Wei and Shu Qing Cang that she had already moved on. And it hit me then that this drama's trajectory for the leads isn't really about whether they'll end up together. Yes, in my heart of hearts, it would be so sweet if she and Xiao Wei reconciled, because with him, she can be herself and let her guard down. These childhood sweethearts clearly know each other inside out, and I'm a big believer in second chances. But Xiao Fang has been through so much in the past few months that the truth is, she has outgrown him. (Shu Qing Cang isn't even a contender for her heart.)

There's no demonising of Xiao Wei here. In fact, I've always rooted for him, even when he was being a complete mess. The Xiao Fang who returned as an unwed mother, who got caught in the crossfire of a chaotic feud over her bride price, who endured gossip about her choice to be a single mum and give her child her surname, is the very same Xiao Fang who showed such grace and forgiveness to those who failed and hurt her. Now here she is, uniting the village and potentially breathing new life into the community with her business idea. She has grown into someone who no longer needs saving, because she has learned to save herself.
