When I went down to the Harbour I noticed this technology that allows you to hold up your waste and it will inform you whether or not it goes in recycling or landfill! It’s always a best practice to be responsible with waste to protect our oceans! #MarEnvS20

Today at Bondi we got fish and chips! Fun fact, cooked seafood doesn’t have the same labeling regulations as raw sea food and can also be shark meat, such as flake, which is gummy shark. #marenvs20 🦈

In class we went on a field trip to Maroubra beach and got to look at the intertidal zone! There were so many different organisms living in each pool, and we found that usually bigger pools will have more biodiversity!

GREAT NEWS: Recently, both Spain & France passed restrictions to reduce single-use plastic in their countries! French law now prohibits fast-food chains from offering single-use items, & Spain is cutting down on single-use plastic packaging- both wins for oceans! @OceanaEurope

It's amazing how life can exist in harsh places.🌎 This is Footage from the Mariana Trench. 10,792 meters below the ocean surface. The pressure here is an astonishing 15,000+ PSI. Humans exposed to this would be crushed instantly.

These penguins are so adorable! Penguins are one of my favorite birds, and I even saw a sign at a beach in Sydney saying there are sometimes penguin sightings there! Fun fact: emperor penguins are monogamous seabirds!

It’s crazy how much rain my friends back at university have been experiencing! Rain storms like this are super unusual for Los Angeles and it makes me concerned about potential runoff entering rivers and oceans that could contain toxins and negatively impact the wildlife.

Polluted runoff is a serious threat in coastal cities and lots of toxins and pollutants enter the water this way. It’s a good practice to prevent your usage of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers in order to keep these chemicals out of our ocean.

Just like Miami, Sydney is a coastal city! This means we have an extra responsibility in making sure that plastics don’t end up in our oceans. Whenever possible, use reusable bags and water bottles and pick up any spare garbage from streets or storm drains if it is safe to do so!

@Loren_unsw @kenar_unsw Yes, such a good point! It’s crazy how easy it is to be unaware of micro plastics because we often can’t see them. It’s always good to avoid plastic water bottles and products containing micro beads!

It is so important to do everything we can to protect the Right Whale population. Always be sure to use as little plastic as possible in order to keep our ocean safe and educate others about the serious threats to whales such as entanglement, whaling and ship strikes.
