@courosa I love my students, but I try not to delude myself. Having a pile of late assignments coming in at the end of a term is the new reality in many schools and distance ed programs. It's not the students lack of responsibility the causes it. We do. Our system creates it.
@courosa 7 continued However, using the re write philosophy means a significant number of my students don't try very hard on the first assignment and just get "something" in. Then they improve based on my feedback...but do not reach their potential. And that's ok. They use the "system".
@courosa 7. You think you have me pegged as the old ready for retirement curmudgeon...but I teach ELA. Nearly every writing assignment I get I give feedback and invite kids to re write. Until the end of term, even the semester. The academic students like learning how to improve. However..
@courosa 6. I appreciate the ideas of no zeroes, no lates (that's a behavior), re-writing etc. However, separating the assignment that demonstrates a "standard" from the ability to hand it in on time is not preparing a student for life. It actually is an unreal circumstance.
@courosa 5. Do you teach "students" to manage time? I think you can share strategies with them, but we all learn to manage time by getting things done when we need to. Which implies a deadline. So you learn time management by meeting time sensitive targets.
@courosa 4 continued. You could argue some teachers will follow the first deadline and I am unprofessional. Maybe. But your students are a mix of exactly the same types.of behaviors. How would you modify my behaviour? Is it fair I get an extra 9 days to hand mine in?
@courosa 4. We are exactly the same as the kids. There is no firm deadline for my professional.growth plan to be in. End of September. I don't get it done. We are asked to hand it in first week of October. I wait for the email that says you need to hand your plan in by tomorrow. /
@courosa 3. Run it through the parent filter...if it were your child. Would you want to know if their assignments were late? Do you want them to have no consequences for being late? If your kid busts their ass to get it in...and a different kid can take extra time? Are you OK with that?
@courosa 2. I don't have use firm due dates. I expect students to be learners. Many learn that they don't have to complete the assignment on time. They manipulate the system they are presented with. I would be disappointed if they didn't. No penalty for late is teaching them to be late.
@courosa 33 years of teaching high school...my observations. 1. Taking an extra day or two to complete an assignment is awesome. Until the high achieving student, who balanced work and extra curr to hand in on time asks why they should bother to do that.
@eric_bellMB @debgreening Listen, you wanted action, we shut down the Hookah Bars. You called for restrictions, we stopped all Soap Box Car Derbyโs. Now you ask for more? What? You want us to tear the heart out of the winter Tennis League? Well, dammit, we will never go to those extremes! Sask Strong 4EVA
@tammyrobert I looked at @realDonaldTrump 's Twitter feed...three of his last 10 tweets are labelled non-factual and are not shown unless you click view. In case you are a supporter...it means he lied. He lies. He makes shit up. And what's wrong with you if you think that's ok?
