I'll bet you he is not athletic at all. That's what most folks don't understand. I'll bet he cannot sprint, hit a box jump above 36", move well on a basketball court, or finish three 2-minute rounds in a ring. Lifting is very valuable for athletes, but unless you're a bodybuilder or powerlifter, lifting is to make you better at something else and it's used alongside multiple modalities to make you a better athlete. Most don't understand this.
