On a more serious note, consider what a girl, what a woman, had to endure in that era. Pingjun's mother was made a mistress without ever realizing it, until it was far too late; she fled while pregnant with Pingjun. To raise a child alone as a single mother, cast out by society, and yet still provide and care for that child with no one beside her, that is motherly love there.

That's why she warned Pingjun about Changxuan in the early episodes. What mother would want to see her daughter go through the same fate as her? It would be too cruel if Pingjun actually gave in to Changxuan's demands early and became his mistress

But yes, this scene brought me to tears. Mother and daughter endured so much. And what cuts deeper still is that she will soon lose her mother too, left utterly alone in this world. Even with her father and Changxuan still present, it is not the same. A mother is something else entirely, and once she is gone, that absence is a loneliness no one else can fill.
