JICA Rwanda Participates in the Africa Coffee and Tea Expo 2026

JICA Rwanda Officials led by Mr. SAKAMOTO Atsuki, Chief Representative of JICA Rwanda, participated in the Africa Coffee and Tea Expo (ACT Expo) 2026, which was officially opened by Hon. Dr. Telesphore Ndabamenye, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources of Rwanda. JICA joined the event as part of its support to Rwanda's coffee sector through the Coffee Value Chain Upgrading Project (CUP2), which works with coffee cooperatives to improve quality, productivity, and market access. The event brings together key stakeholders from across the coffee and tea value chains to promote trade, investment, and partnership opportunities.

In his opening remarks, Minister Ndabamenye called for stronger collaboration, innovation, value addition, and sustainable investment to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of Africa's coffee and tea sectors.

More than a traditional exhibition, ACT Expo serves as a continental B2B platform that connects producers, exporters, buyers, investors, researchers, and policymakers, fostering business linkages and market opportunities across Africa and beyond.

On the sidelines of the event, Mr. SAKAMOTO Atsuki met with leaders of the three pilot cooperatives supported by the CUP2 Project to discuss their progress, challenges, and opportunities for future collaboration. ABE Initiative Workshop in Kigali Strengthens Business Collaboration

On December 13, 2025, the second in-person workshop of the year was held in Kigali under the
African Business Education (ABE) Initiative for Youth, a program that supports master’s degree studies and internships. The workshop brought together over 50 participants, including 20 participants from Japan and other African countries who joined online.

A key highlight of the workshop was the presentation by 11 ABE Initiative Ex-participants, who shared progress on their business proposals. These proposals were refined in collaboration with Japanese companies and stakeholders, marking a new activity introduced under the initiative this year to strengthen practical business engagement.

In his closing remarks, the Vice President of the Kobe Institute of Computing (KIC) congratulated the ABE Initiative Ex-participants and offered advice to the business proposal owners. He emphasized three key aspects valued by Japanese companies: honesty as idea creators, punctuality and fairness, and boldness. He noted that sincerity would continue to earn the trust of Japanese partners.

DAY 3 of ABE Crossover to Kenya

The ABE Crossover to Kenya concluded successfully with a productive reporting session and dinner attended by 50 participants.They including Japanese companies, ABE Ex participants from Kenya, Japanese stakeholders, and local Kenyan businesses.

ABE representatives from Rwanda presented their business proposals. The presentations were followed by a targeted networking session where each proposal was connected with relevant stakeholders to explore potential collaboration opportunities with experienced companies in Nairobi. #Rwanda #Japan #Kenya #PrivateSector

DAY 1 of ABE Crossover to Kenya

On 26th November 2025, 9 ABE ex participants including 8 Business proposal makers, joined the Crossover to Kenya (Crossover = Cross the border to overcome challenges together).

The day started with a visit to the ISUZU plant in Nairobi, which marks 50 years of operation in Kenya. We learned and witnessed the manufacturing (Monozukuri モノづくり) of ISUZU based on the customer and quality first philosophy. It was encouraging to know that an ABE ex-participant was playing a key role in quality control.

The entire operation is standardized and transparent, which enabled the local employees to take the leadership. Out of 600 employees, only 3 were Japanese. ISUZU is the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in Japan.

They also visited Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), for its research networking project with JICA Kenya named Africa AI Japan, related to Agriculture and Technology. We learned about the consistent and dedicated contribution of JICA to JKUAT for decades, and how the technology is taught to the youth of Kenya to make the Kenyan industry sustainable and competitive.

We visited a company led by an ABE ex-participant startup working with a Japanese private company where she had the internship. This new laundry business is driven by her passion with a <Start small, Grow big> moto which was her belief as the key to success in business.

JICA Rwanda Office decided to conduct an ABE Crossover in East Africa, to enhance local network and communication of ABE ex-participants across the border in the region. In 2024, JICA Rwanda Office dispatched seven ABE ex-participants to Tanzania to learn from their Tanzanian fellow ex-participants. The experience in Tanzania has helped us to initiate a new activity with ABE ex-participants to create new business proposals.

This ABE Crossover between Rwanda and Kenya is next and it is planned to maximize the opportunity to put their competence into practice in their relevant institutions in a diversified and sustainable way.
