Government Probe into “Over-Diagnosis” of #ADHD & Mental Health over-diagnosis of ADHD and mental health conditions risks overlooking the real picture.
In the recent article in the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP Open), written with GPs, psychiatrists/researchers and educationalists, it highlights why this narrative is misleading.
Too often, the underlying physiological conditions including hypermobility, dysautonomia and related issues are missed or not even considered though, they affect both children and adults and have a profound impact on physical and mental health.
Without recognition and diagnosis, many lose opportunities in education, work and quality of life.
Some end up trapped in cycles of prison and re-offending, where the underlying causes remain unaddressed.
This is not just about health. It is about justice, education and economic wellbeing and health literacy. Diagnosis and support are not “over-diagnosis” they are vital steps to improve lives, reduce long-term costs, and build a fairer society.

“Your body will never forget how someone made your nervous system feel.” Anon
This quote hits deep for so many of us with EDS & chronic illness.
Our bodies remember the fear, the dismissals, the years without answers.
But they also remember safety. Validation. Those rare moments when someone truly listened.
We still need to create more validations. Still too many dismissals happening to our community.
