Our carbon market learning journey continues. Thank you to everyone who has been following along, and welcome to those joining us for the first time.
Today, we proceed to understand the Letโs dive in.
โ Carbon markets exist to ensure a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. When all those occur, our environment is affected, hence climate change.
โ Carbon Markets contribute to forest and biodiversity protection through activities like land restoration and afforestation.
โ Through carbon markets, employment opportunities are created for the locals, which supports their livelihood.
โ Through carbon market activities, the air, soil, and human ecosystems are cleaner and more resilient.
Now that we understand multiple benefits of the carbon markets, for our next post, we will understand the potential risks of the Carbon Markets for Host countries. Follow along as we continue with breaking down more carbon market segments.

๐ While the world's cameras are turned to the inaugural #AfricaForward Summit in Nairobi on 11-12 May, the continent's economic boardroom convenes just 48 hours later. From 14-15 May, six sitting Heads of State gather in Kigali for the Africa CEO Forum 2026, the largest pan-African meeting of presidents, CEOs and investors, where the continent's political leadership and its private sector write the next chapter of African prosperity together.
๐ค H.E. @PaulKagame, President of Rwanda and host of the summit, welcomes H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT (Nigeria), H.E. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema (Gabon), H.E. Daniel Chapo (Mozambique), H.E. Mohamed Cheikh Ould El Ghazouani (Mauritania) and H.E. Mamadi Doumbouya (Guinea).
๐ Six leaders who represent some of the most strategic economies on the continent, all aligned on a single conviction: the future of Africa will be financed, built and owned by Africans, with the private sector as the central engine.
๐ก This is what sets ACF apart. Where most international forums frame the continent through the prism of bilateral relations, the Africa CEO Forum convenes 2,000 African and global decision-makers around the issues that will define the next decade: megaprojects and infrastructure, pan-African capitalism, productivity, industrial sovereignty and the acceleration of the AfCFTA. The conversations in Kigali set Africa's own agenda, on Africa's own terms.

East Africa is not starting from zero when it comes to AI; innovation is already happening across Partner States. The challenge has been coordination.
Speaking during the EAC AI Strategy Validation Workshop, Dr. Sylvance Okoth, ES @easteco1, emphasized the importance of moving from fragmented efforts to a unified regional approach.
โAI activities are already ongoing across the regionโbut they are not synchronized. What we are doing is to ensure a harmonized and coordinated framework that brings all these efforts together.โ @OkothSylvance
Following extensive national consultations, the process has now reached the final stage of regional validation. Once validated, the Strategy will undergo formal approval through the East African Community decision-making structuresโincluding the Governing Board, Sectoral Council, and ultimately the Council of Ministers.
Upon approval, the Strategy will be rolled out across Partner States in collaboration with development partners and key stakeholders, marking a major step toward a coordinated, impactful AI ecosystem in East Africa.
Yesterday, we successfully concluded the two day Regional Validation Workshop on the EAC Artificial Intelligence Strategy in Kampala ๐บ๐ฌ marking a key milestone in shaping a coordinated AI future for East Africa.
Convened by EASTECO with the East African Community Secretariat and @eacgiz, the workshop delivered a stakeholder-validated Strategy, agreed priorities, and a clear implementation roadmap.
Next: consolidation โ submission to the Sectoral Council โ adoption by the Council of Ministers โ rollout across Partner States.
In his remarks, Dr. Sylvester Okoth, Executive Secretary of EASTECO, reaffirmed the Commissionโs commitment to advancing Science, Technology and Innovation as a driver of transformation. He noted that the EAC AI Strategy is a strategic instrument to guide the region through the rapidly evolving digital landscape, ensuring that AI contributes meaningfully to economic growth, service delivery, and sustainable development.
Dr. Okoth also highlighted the extensive consultative process undertaken across all Partner States, emphasizing that the Strategy reflects shared regional priorities and a unified vision for AI in East Africa.
The East African Science and Technology Commission @easteco1, in collaboration with the East African Community @jumuiya, and @eacgiz, will convene the Regional Validation Workshop on the EAC Artificial Intelligence Strategy from 4thโ5th May 2026 in Kampala, Uganda.
This important milestone brings together policymakers, academia, private sector, and innovation actors from across the region to review, enrich, and validate the draft EAC Regional AI Strategy, a key framework set to guide the responsible and inclusive adoption of Artificial Intelligence in East Africa.
The workshop will focus on building consensus around the Strategyโs vision, strategic priorities and implementation framework, while also identifying opportunities for partnerships, investment, shared infrastructure and regional collaboration.
As East Africa accelerates its digital transformation journey, this process marks a critical step toward positioning the region as a coordinated and competitive player in the global AI ecosystem.
We are proud to share that we are a Top 50 finalist for the 2026 #GlobalSchoolsPrize! ๐
A huge thank you to @VarkeyFdn for recognising schools around the world driving meaningful impact in education and helping every learner thrive. ๐

๐นThe EAC, alongside regional stakeholders, today marked the 32nd Commemoration of the Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania.
The commemoration began with a solidarity walk through Arusha town, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the EAC Genocide Memorial.
โKwibukaโ, meaning to remember, is a call to honour the lives lost, stand with survivors and reflect on the enduring lessons of the genocide.
The EAC joins the people of Rwanda and the international community in mourning the victims and paying tribute to the resilience of survivors.
