@FrMatkin Catholic liturgical documents tend to treat "homily" as a part of the mass reserved to a priest or deacon, expounding on the propers, whereas a sermon is any preaching or address on a theological topic. (Homilies are always sermons; sermons are not always homilies).
@dhtrue60@allienixon620@smajmj95@dhtrue60@allienixon620 This is true for most non-Lenten Fridays, but as Friday in the Easter Octave is a solemnity, neither abstaining nor a substitute sacrifice is required: Canon 1251 — Abstinence...is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday.
@nassaujuan I have heard it said (without citation) that the Epistle is read to believers and Gospel is preached to the barbarian North (at solemn mass toward the north wall not just from the north side of the altar) as a remnant of the barbarians invading from the north.
@MaterGarruli @ravenousreader I believe that the teaching is that not chewing the host is fine so long as it is swallowed and not entirely dissolved while still in the mouth. Would need a citation though.
@nicksterwixter I am pretty sure any mass meets the obligation as long as it is on the day. This means that if Mary Mother of God was an obligation, a Circumcision mass in the old rite would count as would a ritual mass such as a requiem mass. What mass it is does not matter.
