European countries have introduced digital service taxes to tax large (and mostly American) corporations like Amazon. However, it is European consumers who are paying the tax.
🚨New working paper🚨
Who actually bears the burden of digital service taxes (DSTs)? Governments introduced them to tax large digital firms like Amazon, but as revenue-based taxes they might be passed on. In a new paper with Rohit Muddasani, we study the that. A 🧵 1/7
@roman_janssen I have seen comments stating this, but the wording of the question might be misleading. Confidence in AI about what? As source of truth, economic growth, help for everyday life, …?
German government websites offering sign language and even “easy language” for online services.
… They’re so close to offering English. So close. You can do it 👏👏
Wow, the discussion around surrogacy is amazing. The amount of bad arguments against it reveal the limits of human reasoning. Most arguments boil down to visceral reactions, female “incubators”, gender norms (“men can’t nurture”), or homophobia (“sexual abuse”). Wth.
3 likely factors to consider:
1) Retirees tend not to consume their housing wealth -> Countries with higher homeownership have larger inheritances.
2) Fewer children per couple -> inheritances are shared with fewer siblings.
3) Poor economic past -> little wealth to inherit.
Wealth is highly concentrated and largely inherited in countries such as Spain, Italy, Austrian and Germany. Inheritances and gifts play a considerably smaller role in net wealth in countries such as Portugal, Hungary or Latvia.
Some members of the German SPD want to regulate VPNs to ensure age verification can’t be avoided by using the Internet in a free country. A good example of The Road to Serfdom: The ineffectiveness of regulation spirals into even further regulation.
If we limit approval time and a deadline is approaching, accountable officials will opt to reject the proposal outright. Stressing the approval process won’t fix it, and will lead to even more rules down the line.
There is no way around deregulation.
Very happy that our paper “Gender Norms and Labor-Supply Expectations” (w/ E. Grewenig & K. Werner) is published in @EJ_RES (https://t.co/jwnHVhETXl).
In a survey of 2,000 adolescents, making traditional gender norms salient lowers girls’ expected work hours and related outcomes.
@all2gethernow@Cernovich The explosion in silver demand is astounding. The preference for physical silver rather than derivatives also cannot explain the price increase.
The answer, as I said many times before, lies in reliable internet browsers. No browser meant for human beings wants to be known to be the “robot browser”. That’s why selenium (a common web scraping tool) has become so useless. Webpages are walking themselves off against robots.
