NYT with the deepest reporting on what caused the US-Canada trade deal collapse. In line with prior reports, but some new details. 1) Lutnick late interventions on aluminum & cars + "how to guarantee US won't renege" were key, 2) Ford telling Carney he wouldn't go along also 1/3
Canada is now a midterm ballot-box issue.
Democrats could hardly have asked for a better political issue heading into the midterms. Republicans, meanwhile, seem remarkably quiet.
There is a reason.
A trade war with Canada may sound abstract in Washington. In Michigan, Maine and other states whose workers, manufacturers, farmers and businesses depend heavily on cross-border trade, it becomes very real, very quickly.
And some of those states could determine who controls the Senate.
You can be certain Republican strategists in competitive races are looking at this and wondering why the White House would hand Democrats an economic issue tailor-made for their campaigns.
Because control of the Senate isn’t just about legislation. It determines whether a president can get nominees including federal judges confirmed during the final two years of his term.
Republicans are now fighting to hold those seats.
Imagine if Kamala Harris became the first female president of the United States and then tore down the East wing, obsessed about a ballroom, started a losing war with Iran, took away health care and food from children, raked in billions, fired everyone to put her friends in their positions, fell asleep on camera consistently, mouthed off on social media, openly prosecuted people she didn’t like without real cause, started a slush fund to fund domestic terrorists, and generally lied every second of the day. She wasn’t even allowed to laugh.
From @TheAthleticFC: U.S. host cities for the 2026 World Cup are chasing FIFA for millions of dollars they believe they were promised by soccer’s governing body that have so far gone unpaid. https://t.co/u4RjrmLdjg

We are getting less locomotives (45 not 57) for roughly four times the price (the Kiwis paid about 300m CAD).
The fact that this isn't a major news item is crazy.

literally will add an hour of travel time between Toronto and Montréal, good grief, Kingston is not large enough to deserve a massive diversion from a straight path that can hit the max speed for sustained durations
Up until ~10 years ago, most boreal forest lightening strikes and human ignitions fell on damp ground, often damp from recent snow melt. Climate change has transformed this, turning the northern half of North America into a giant tinder box, where even the soil carbon can burn.

Boston, which still has two World Cup games to run, has closed its fan festival. One of several cities which didn’t fulfil FIFA’s original ask of official Fan Fest for every day of the tournament due to the heavy public costs.
For those confused as to how adding Kingston between Peterborough and Ottawa will slow down Alto and add a shitload of curved track, behold this Microsoft Paint diagram, illustrating the Straight Path vs the Fuckass Curve:

Consider not reposting videos of the officer wounded in the shooting from earlier today in MTL. That's someone's son, father, brother, husband, friend down. Think about that.
Thinking of all those affected.
