OLA stands in solidarity with the Black Community against systemic racism and police violence experienced every day in North America. OLA and the library sector owe it to our Black staff, members, volunteers, authors, and library patrons to demand change and accountability (1/2)
@emilymelissabee I know that MPL has trained supervisors in Mental Health First Aid. Our code of conduct has been replaced with our Customer Promise. In my 7 yrs it is more likely that a cust calls the cops than staff.
If you know of any Canadian library systems that have worked to change their policies and procedures around incidents to reduce / eliminate the reliance on police, please send my way, library pals.
It’s been an unbelievably hard week for me as a black person and black journalist in Canada. At times, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Dealing with the trauma of seeing #GeorgeFloyd
And in top of that, reporting on the dead of a young man who drowned in Regina
RT if you're still staying indoors (aside from one walk per day for exercise and essential journeys to the supermarket) because I need to know that there are others out there still taking this seriously 😭
@emilymelissabee Nope. We have already given notice that ours will not be going back. Hope that September brings a better situation (anxiously awaiting the min of Ed report)
Detailed review of ethical governance for digital epidemiology in the pandemic in @ScienceMagazine by @MichelleM_Mello and C. Jason Wang. Two key principles:
1. Weigh correct counterfactual (i.e. continued lock-down)
2. Minimal use of data to achieve goal

@jayshaw29 I am all for sound public health measures, but the implications of these tracing apps honestly scares me. I hope that the benefits are measured against the cost to privacy and other ethical standards.
@ElDuvelle @skip_sf @RobinMazumder@RegionWaterloo There needs to be a balance. You can tell when a pedestrian would be a good driver. They are aware of their situation and are looking at/communicating with drivers. Either group just barging straight ahead will get someone killed.
These are some great points for admin to think about while planning to relaunch their physical services. Would love to hear more from public health about contact tracing.
We’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about libraries being asked to conduct contact tracing. We think this is a terrible idea for privacy and for public health. Our statement: https://t.co/xS6LYtbCj8
Libraries! As we consider reopening, please consider our authority as a trusted institution and what reopening tells our users.
Namely, if we reopen, we’re saying it’s safe to be out and about and not just to see us.
BTW, my survey on #library responses to #COVID19 and the impact on ongoing #LowMorale experiences is still open. If you were already dealing w/low morale before the pandemic & would like to participate, please do (and please RT). Thank you! https://t.co/eEKqWs1dJL #LibraryTwitter
@CharlotteRock I don't even need to run the search, I know what the results will be! Never thought of it before, but I will be very conscious about this moving forward!
