People are annoyed at Matt, which happens, but AES is part of that generation of left-wing candidates who see Obama as an inspiring politician who blew his big domestic opportunity by underrating GOP opposition, was "timid" during Arab Spring, expanded drone warfare, etc. All in his memoir.
AES is now interested in coming together, with him taking the baton from Obama and his generation, but the tension's interesting. (And if AES had beaten Whitmer to be the 2018 gov nominee, I'm sure he'd have campaigned with Obama then.)
Satire about satire. Knives Out, Don't Look Up, Triangle of Sadness are all in the crosshairs. Well-off american liberals love "eat the rich" movies not understanding that globally, they are the rich. Isolated from the cruelty they sow, they wash their hands clean.
In Digger, everyone is to blame and no one is innocent. Digger Rockwell isn't the sin cake eater he was made out to be. You can't externalize all your accountability to a convenient villain. The mirror turns on yourself. This was too much for american critics.
Digger is dialectical cinema. It laughs at the audience for laughing at it. It laughs at those who criticise movies by pointing out contradictions in them. Digger embraces the contradiction and digs its way out to something new entirely.

Saying some obvious things out loud. A small 🧵
Cloaked as dispassionate analysis, much of post-election narrativizing is about coalitions within & between political parties jockeying for status. They are trying to claim victories & distance themselves from failure.
Exhibit A.
