The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) welcomes Japan Coast Guard's (JCG) training vessel Itsukushima on Thursday (July 16, 2026) for a four-day port visit aimed at strengthening professional cooperation and reaffirms maritime partnership between the Philippines and Japan.

During the port visit, PCG and JCG personnel will participate in official calls, professional exchanges, facility and ship tours, on board activities, and sports engagements.

In a joint statement, the governments of the Philippines, Australia, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Romania, Slovenia, the UK, and the US reiterated their support for the July 12, 2016, unanimous decision on South China Sea.

"We reaffirm that the Award rendered ten years ago by the Arbitral Tribunal is a significant milestone and is final, legally binding, and definitive between China and the Philippines with respect to the maritime entitlements and claims addressed by the Arbitral Tribunal," they highlighted.

Today, July 12, 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of The Philippines' historic win against China's massive claim in the South China Sea.

The landmark ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration invalidated Beijing’s nine-dash line demarcation that claimed vast maritime territory and islands in the South China Sea. The 501-page ruling was handed down in The Hague, Netherlands, more than three years after the case was filed by the Philippines in January 2013.

Philippine Navy guided missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG6), currently deployed in Hawaii, USA to participate in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2026, held a Flag Raising Ceremony to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award last July 6, 2026, aboard the ship.

FFG6 Commanding Officer, Captain Paul Michael P Hechanova PN(GSC), echoed the message of the Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines, General Romeo S Brawner Jr PN, to the Officers and Enlisted Personnel of the ship, reminding them of their duty to protect the people, uphold the sovereign rights, and strengthen the territorial defense posture in the West Philippine Sea.

In his message, General Brawner called on every AFP personnel to renew their commitment to “Our Seas, Our Rights, Our Future,” and reminded them to protect not just the seas, but also the future of every Filipino.
