@CEPIvaccines@WHO CEPI has proven to be a strong ally in the fight against mpox, I believe this declaration will further strengthen existing partnerships. Well done!
@kakape @alexandraphelan Certainly, I knew it was just a matter of time given the sustained circulation in Africa where the virus is maintained. Deeper questions should now be asked eg reservoirs, transmission dynamics in urban and rural circles and the risk factors for long term circulation in endemic
The repeat of the global declaration also shows that the termination of the first PHEIC in 2023 was “premature,” @alexandraphelan contends, particularly given the fact that countries in the Global North had “failed to appropriately respond to the ongoing efforts needed.”

With #mpox now declared as a public health emergency of international concern, by @DrTedros tomorrow I'll be chairing an @ACTAccelerator meeting with heads of health agencies. The top priority is quickly getting diagnostics, treatments and vaccines to the 🇨🇩 and countries.
Nigeria is an epicentre for avian influenza with three major migratory routes for wild birds transversing the country. H5N1 Clade 2.2 was reported in 2006, with 2.3.2, 2.3.2.1f afterwards and 2.3.4.4b in 2021.
